Kishtwar in February
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Roads stay blocked by heavy snow; only the town center is reachable
February is Kishtwar's coldest month — -8 to 3°C. Snow blankets the Paddar valley. The Chenab gorge below town is dramatic in winter: grey water, snow-dusted cliff faces, and silence. The road from Jammu (250km) is maintained but challenging. The sapphire mines that once made Paddar famous worldwide are buried. Kishtwar in February is a place outsiders don't think about, and that's fine with the residents.
The February story
February Kishtwar is deep winter in a way that even most Indian mountain towns aren't. The town's location — surrounded by peaks exceeding 5000m, at the confluence of valleys — traps cold air and snow. The Chenab gorge in February, with partial ice and snow-covered cliffs, is scenically extraordinary but accessible only to those already in Kishtwar (don't travel specifically for this). The sapphire history is worth knowing: Paddar sapphires, discovered in 1881, produced some of the finest blue sapphires in the world. The mines are now nearly exhausted but the geological story is fascinating. Small sapphire specimens occasionally surface in Kishtwar bazaar — buyer beware regarding authenticity. For planning: June is the ideal month for Kishtwar's adventure menu. The Paddar trek, Chenab rafting, and national park are all at peak accessibility. Budget: Rs 500-1000 for winter lodging.
