Kishtwar Blue Sapphires — Sumcham mine 1881.
The world-famous "Kashmir sapphire" blue gem trade originated not from Srinagar but here. A landslide in 1881 in remote Padder Valley exposed velvety cornflower-blue crystals; a Sumcham-village hunter (or shepherd, accounts vary) sold pieces to Laholi traders who carried them to Shimla, where their value was recognised.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
When news reached Maharaja Ranbir Singh in Jammu, he placed the Sumcham mine under royal control. The peak output years were 1881-1887 — the "Old Mine" sapphires from this window remain the global benchmark for cornflower blue and are auction-record holders to this day. The mine sits at 4,500m+ and was workable only a few months a year; major production ended by the 1930s. Government Geology & Mining Department has periodically attempted revival (most recently 2020s), but access to Padder/Sumcham remains strictly permit-controlled. The story is what locals will tell you in Kishtwar town; the mine itself is not a casual visit.
