The Baijnath temple excursion in March is ideal: the 12th-century Katyuri temples are more architecturally significant than their modest fame suggests, and March weather makes the visit comfortable. For walkers, the Kausani-to-Baijnath road (17km) is walkable in a full day and passes through terraced fields and pine forest. The tea factory opens for tours in March — small-scale, artisanal production of Kausani tea, which has a character distinct from Darjeeling or Assam. Budget: Rs 900-2200. Weekend tourists increase from mid-March. The Himalayan views are reliable in mornings, less so in afternoons as spring haze builds.
