Kanatal in August
Uttarakhand, India
Monsoon rains close most camps and block mountain views for the month
August continues the downpour. Kanatal is at its emptiest and greenest simultaneously. The forest canopy drips continuously. Cloud sometimes descends to ground level, reducing visibility to metres. The Mussoorie-Chamba road through Kanatal can be affected by landslides. For those here, the experience is raw mountain monsoon — beautiful and inconvenient in equal measure.
The August story
August is July continued with slightly warmer temperatures and the addition of Independence Day celebrations in nearby Chamba (12km) — a modest local affair but a window into small-town Uttarakhand patriotism. The forest is at peak green. The mushroom diversity on the Kodia trail is remarkable for mycology enthusiasts. The clouds create dramatic light effects — shafts of sun breaking through to illuminate a single tree or clearing while everything else stays in grey-green shadow. Budget: Rs 600-1000. Stock up in Chamba. The road from Dehradun is generally fine but add flexibility for weather delays. August Kanatal asks for nothing except warm clothing, waterproofs, and the ability to sit with a cup of chai and watch clouds move through a forest. That's enough.
