Joshimath in February
Uttarakhand, India
Town experiencing active subsidence with most services closed—only viable for Auli skiing via gondola
February continues Joshimath's complicated winter. If Auli is open for skiing, it is India's best slope: a 3 km run from 3050m with panoramic views of Nanda Devi (7816m). The ropeway from Joshimath to Auli is Asia's longest cable car at 4.15 km. Temperatures range 0-10°C. The town itself shows visible subsidence damage — cracked walls, tilted buildings, abandoned houses. The Narsingh Temple, one of the four math (monasteries) established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, continues its pujas. The Shankaracharya math is the spiritual anchor of a town whose physical foundation is uncertain.
The February story
The Auli ski experience in February is at its peak — snow cover is maximum, the run is in prime condition, and ski instructors from GMVN and private operators offer packages from ₹1500-3000 per day including equipment. The slope is beginner-friendly on the lower section and intermediate on the upper run. The view from the top — Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, Ghori Parvat — is one of the great Himalayan panoramas. The ropeway operates 9 AM-4 PM for skiers. Non-skiers can ride up, walk the Auli meadow (snow-covered but flat), and take in the view. Back in Joshimath, the subsidence walkthrough (self-guided, visible from the main road) is sobering: cracks running through concrete buildings, tilted structures, abandoned homes with personal belongings still visible inside. The geological story — Joshimath sits on ancient landslide debris, not bedrock — explains both why the town existed (flat ground in a valley of slopes) and why it is failing. The Narsingh Temple continues regardless. Room rates: ₹800-2000. GMVN rest houses in Joshimath and Auli are the most reliable stays.
