Jibhi in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
Jibhi in January is a cold, snow-dusted hamlet at 1560 metres in the Tirthan Valley. Temperatures drop to -2°C to 8°C. Fresh snow on the cedar and pine forests transforms the valley into a quiet white corridor. The handful of wooden guesthouses and homestays run on bukhari (wood stove) heating and hot water that arrives in buckets. The waterfalls — Jibhi's signature attraction — are reduced to icy trickles or frozen entirely. The hippie-backpacker crowd that fills this place in summer is absent. What remains is a Himachali village doing what it has always done: surviving winter gracefully.
The January story
The real January experience is the homestay itself. Stay with a Himachali family — sit by the bukhari, eat home-cooked rajma-chawal and siddu (steamed wheat bread stuffed with poppy seeds or walnuts), and let the host family explain the valley's seasons. Jibhi's wooden architecture — traditional Himachali kath-kuni style using alternating layers of stone and timber without cement — is best appreciated when you're living in it. The Tirthan River walk (follow the road south toward Banjar) is peaceful and the bridge crossings offer good photography. The Chehni Kothi, a 1500-year-old tower temple 6 km from Jibhi, is accessible in winter and one of Himachal's most remarkable structures — a multi-storey wooden tower that has survived earthquakes and centuries. Entry is free. The GHNP Tirthan gate has a visitor centre with information on the park's UNESCO World Heritage designation. Room rates: ₹500-1200. Carry cash — ATMs in Banjar (7 km) work intermittently.
