Kangla Fort is the ancient seat of Manipuri kings. The Loktak Lake (48km away) with its floating phumdis is unique on Earth. Manipur is the birthplace of modern polo (sagol kangjei). An open-air burial-mound site with a small museum housing 14th-15th century iron-age pottery, ornaments and grave goods of the local Khaba clan, presented alongside the still-functioning Meitei village around the mounds. Closest you'll get to the pre-Vaishnava Manipuri material culture without travelling to a state-museum store-room.

WHERE TO EAT · 8 VERIFIED PICKS
Signature: Slow-cooked pork hathei
Opened winter 2016 by Korou Khundrakpam and Kundo Yumnam — Imphal's first contemporary restaurant to put tribal Manipuri ingredients (hathei chillies, country chicken, foraged herbs) on a Mediterranean menu. No-MSG, no-bottled-water, sourdough and kombucha made in-house. Doubles as a culture venue for poetry and music gigs.
Tip: Two flights up to the second floor — no lift. Order across both menus: the 'Neighbourhood' plate for tribal Manipuri, the 'Elsewhere' plate for pasta. Best ambience in town for a long lunch.
Signature: Manipuri thali (veg + fish)
Run exclusively by women, this basement spot opposite Ema Market Complex is the most-cited place in Imphal for an honest Manipuri thali — rice, two dals, a pakora kadhi, three vegetable preparations and a side of fried beans, plus fish curry on the non-veg plate. Fixed pricing, freshly cooked, no frills.
Tip: Open lunch only, until ~2:30pm — go before 1pm or you risk dishes running out. Cash preferred. Walk down from Ima Keithel; the sign is in the basement opposite the parking stand.
Signature: DIY Korean tabletop BBQ
Imphal's only proper rooftop pan-Asian spot — the DIY Korean BBQ at the table is the draw. Locals call it the 'Asian Bowl Rooftop' for the bamboo-and-glass canopy. Worth the climb (no lift).
Tip: Korean BBQ portions start at 2 people minimum, so go in a group. Sunset on the rooftop is the best seat in central Imphal.
Signature: Multi-cuisine all-day menu
The Classic Hotel's first-floor restaurant sits directly across the road from the North Gate of Kangla Fort, the historic seat of Meitei kings — making it the most logical lunch stop on a heritage walk. Sister lounge Rita Cafe runs a live band on Sundays.
Tip: Ask for a window seat facing the fort moat. Pair lunch with a Kangla Fort visit (closes 5pm). The Classic Hotel's larger sibling Classic Grande (Radisson Individuals) is a separate property in Chinga, not this address.
Signature: Non-veg Manipuri thali with 4-5 fish preparations
Small all-women family-run thali joint serving veg, fish and full non-veg Meitei platters under ₹200. The non-veg thali features four to five different fish recipes — uncommon even by Imphal's standards. Clean, hygienic, and a long-time fixture in Wahengbam Leikai.
Tip: Order the fish thali — it's the house specialty. Small dining room means lunch fills up; arrive by 12:30pm. Tripadvisor lists a Thangal Bazaar location too, but the original Wahengbam Leikai address is the one regulars use.
Signature: Chicken thali with rice, dal and iromba
An old reliable on M.G. Avenue beside the police station — open 24 hours, popular for chicken-rice plates and a budget Manipuri thali. Locals rate the simplicity; tourists rate the convenience next to Thangal Bazaar shopping.
Tip: Order the chicken thali — it's the staple here, served with iromba (mashed-veg-with-fermented-fish chutney). Skip the menu's continental section.
WHERE TO SLEEP · EDITOR'S PICKS
Heritage Hotel
We recommend it as Imphal's most established upscale property, with colonial-era architecture, on-site dining, and direct access to the city's cultural hub near Kangla Fort.
Guesthouse
We recommend it for its central position within walking distance of Kangla Fort, Ima Keithel market, and local tea stalls that define daily Imphal life.
Floating Homestay
We recommend it for the rare experience of sleeping on Loktak's waters in a traditional Manipuri constructed floating platform, with morning views of water lilies and fishermen in monoxyls.
Mid-Tier Hotel
We recommend it for clean rooms, reliable service, and proximity to Loktak Lake without the premium markup of tourist-focused properties.
