Gangtok in July
Sikkim, India
July is full monsoon โ 600-800mm of rain this month alone. Gangtok is wrapped in cloud for days. The monastery interiors become the attraction (dry, atmospheric, active). MG Marg operates with umbrellas. Landslides can close NH10 for hours or days, stranding travellers in Siliguri. The Teesta river roars through its valley below the city. Orchids bloom in the brief sunny intervals.
The July story
July tests your commitment to Gangtok. The rain is relentless, the clouds omnipresent, and Kanchenjunga hasn't been seen in weeks. What's left is the city's cultural infrastructure: monasteries, museums, the Institute of Tibetology, and MG Marg's indoor restaurants and shops. Rumtek Monastery's rainy-season atmosphere โ dark prayer halls lit by butter lamps, chanting echoing through fog โ is genuinely transcendent. The orchid collection at the various nurseries peaks. Local Sikkimese life, unbothered by monsoon, is visible to the few tourists who made it through. Prices are at annual lows. The food is warming โ thukpa and momos were designed for exactly this weather. The risk: NH10 can close for days, stranding you. Pakyong flights cancel frequently. If you don't mind being trapped in a beautiful city with great food and living monasteries, July Gangtok works. If you need schedule certainty, it doesn't.
