Caution
Doodhpathri in March
Jammu & Kashmir, India
March begins Doodhpathri's thaw — but only begins. Temperatures: -4°C to 6°C. The road may open in late March in good years, but the meadows are still under snow with meltwater beginning to create the streams that define the valley. Early pioneers may reach the valley only to find it half-frozen.
The March story
Late March, if the road opens, offers a preview of Doodhpathri that few people see: the snow receding from the meadow edges, revealing bright green grass underneath. The streams that run milk-white from glacial melt begin their annual flow. It is raw, cold, and stunning — but there are zero facilities. No food stalls, no tent operators, no pony rides. You bring everything or you go without. The Gujjar encampments may sell chai if asked politely. This is strictly for self-sufficient adventure visitors. No accommodation — return to Srinagar.
