Dambuk in May
Arunachal Pradesh, India
Pre-monsoon heat and daily thunderstorms make hiking conditions treacherous in May
May in Dambuk is monsoon at full strength. Monthly rainfall lands at 400-500mm, the Dibang River runs at near-flood stage, and the 35km Roing-Dambuk road develops impassable stretches as small streams feed into seasonal washouts. Daytime 27-31C, nights 21-24C, humidity 90 percent. The Bhupen Hazarika Setu remains motorable (it is built for floods) but the onward Roing-Dambuk leg is unreliable for stretches of 3-7 days. The Mishmi homestay grid in Dambuk village is closed for monsoon — orange orchard owners turn to harvest preparation. Power cuts run 5-7 hours daily. Domestic flights to Dibrugarh continue but cancellations rise. The Orange Festival ground is under monsoon water through to October. There is no version of the trip that works in May; wait for late October.
