Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in November
Kerala, India
Go in November—it's Kerala's driest sanctuary with active wildlife and mild temperatures, but expect sparse facilities and bring serious water; shoulder season before peak crowds.
Peak crowds
November is one of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Busiest Nov–Feb during cool dry season; Apr–Aug extreme heat and monsoon keeps crowds away.
Chinnar in November is when the rain-shadow zone opens to its proper season. Northeast monsoon residual eases to under 50mm across 3-5 wet days, almost all in the first ten days. Daytime 21-28C in the dry deciduous zone, nights drop to 18-20C, humidity dropping under 65 percent in the back half. The 90 sq km sanctuary at year-best photographic state — sky clear, trail underfoot dry, flora at year-greenest after the unusual NE-monsoon flush. Wildlife begins concentrating at remaining waterholes — Grizzled Giant Squirrel (Ratufa macroura, only Indian habitat, population 280-330) visibility climbs to 6-8 per trek, sloth bear and gaur sightings double versus October. Forest Department escorted Thoovanam Falls trek (7km, 4-5 hours moderate, ₹500-1,000 group rate) operates at full schedule from the Marayoor range office, online booking at the Forest Department portal 24-48 hours sufficient. Falls still flowing strongly post-NE-monsoon. Marayoor Sandalwood Reserve (₹50 entry, Forest Department-managed) at peak photogenic. 225+ recorded bird species at high detection. Stays at Marayoor homestays ₹1,000-2,200, plantation cottages ₹2,500-4,500; Munnar bracket (60km) ₹1,800-22,000. NH85 Kochi-Munnar-Marayoor (200km) at year-clearest. Strong call for first-time visitors who want the rain-shadow contrast.
