Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in December
Kerala, India
Go in December — firm trails and minimal water crossings make trekking easiest, though expect heat on exposed slopes and bring substantial water reserves.
Peak crowds
December is one of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Busiest Nov–Feb during cool dry season; Apr–Aug extreme heat and monsoon keeps crowds away.
Chinnar in December is operational peak in the Western Ghats rain-shadow zone. Daytime 19-28C in the dry deciduous tracks, nights drop to 16-18C, rainfall under 30mm. The 90 sq km sanctuary at year-clearest visibility, wildlife concentration at the few remaining waterholes building visibly. Grizzled Giant Squirrel (Ratufa macroura, only Indian habitat, population 280-330) visibility climbs to 8-10 per trek; sloth bear, gaur, sambar at concentration peaks; mugger crocodile at Pampar river crossings consistent. Forest Department escorted Thoovanam Falls trek (7km, 4-5 hours moderate, ₹500-1,000 group rate) at full schedule from the Marayoor range office — online booking at the Forest Department portal 48-72 hours through Christmas-NY (versus 24-48 hours off-peak). Falls flowing strong from NE-monsoon catchment. Marayoor Sandalwood Reserve (₹50 entry, Forest Department-managed) at peak photogenic — sandalwood-trade history makes the half-day spur high-value. Christmas-NY week (December 22 to January 5) drives Munnar bracket rates to 2.5-3x base but Marayoor homestays climb only 1.3-1.5x — Marayoor at ₹1,300-2,800 (versus ₹1,000-2,200 base), plantation cottages ₹2,800-5,000 — making Chinnar one of the few Kerala Western Ghats trips that stays accessible through the holiday compression. NH85 Kochi-Munnar-Marayoor (200km) at year-busiest through the Munnar belt; depart Kochi by 7am or arrive after 5pm.
