Peak Season
Champawat in October
Uttarakhand, India
October brings Champawat's harvest. Terraced fields turn gold with rice, the Kumaoni countryside takes on a Tuscan quality, and festivals light up the town. Dussehra celebrations are local and genuine — no tourist packaging, just a community celebrating as it has for centuries.
The October story
Devidhura's Bagwal fair (stone-pelting festival) may occur in late September or October — check locally, as it follows the Hindu calendar. The ritual combat between clans, using stones, is one of India's most unusual traditions. Champawat itself celebrates Dussehra with processions through streets barely wide enough for two. The Baleshwar temple complex against October blue sky, framed by turning leaves, is postcard material that no postcard has ever reproduced because nobody comes here with a camera. Rooms: ₹800-1,500/night.
