Champawat in February
Uttarakhand, India
Fewer tourists means empty temple courtyards, but also minimal amenities and services
February warms Champawat enough for the almond trees to bloom. Temperatures climb to 8-16°C, the sky clears to deep winter blue, and the Himalayan views from the ridge above town sharpen to a knife edge. The ancient capital begins to thaw, literally and figuratively.
The February story
The Abbott Mount trek (about 15 km from Champawat) leads to a colonial-era settlement at 2,000 metres with a haunted church and views that extend to the Nepal border. The trail passes through oak-rhododendron forest that is starting to show early buds. Back in town, the Ek Hathiya ka Naula — a water fountain carved from a single stone — exemplifies the engineering precision that defined Kumaoni craftsmanship. The local Kumaoni thali (bhatt ki churkani, aloo ke gutke, bal mithai for dessert) is reason enough to visit. Rooms remain ₹500-1,200/night. February Champawat is for people who find their own reasons to be somewhere.
