Chamba in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
January's subzero nights make outdoor exploration uncomfortable unless you're specifically chasing snow-draped landscapes
January Chamba is cold and honest about it. At 996 metres in Himachal, temperatures range 2-12°C, the Ravi river runs steel-grey, and the Chaugan meadow — the town's 800-year-old central green — lies empty under pale winter sun. Tourists are elsewhere. The 1,000-year-old Lakshmi Narayan temple complex stands without a queue for the first time all year.
The January story
The six Shaivite and Vaishnavite temples dating to the 10th century deserve slow attention, and January gives you that. Morning light hits the shikhara towers with a warmth the air lacks. The Bhuri Singh Museum houses Pahari miniature paintings and Chamba rumals (embroidered handkerchiefs) that rival any metropolitan gallery — entry is ₹50 and you might be the only visitor. The town's narrow lanes still operate as they have for centuries: chai stalls, wool shops, the occasional goat. Rooms at heritage guesthouses run ₹800-1,800/night. Chamba has survived a millennium by being itself, and January is when that self is most visible.
