Bikaner in May
Rajasthan, India
May is Bikaner at its most hostile. Temperatures regularly cross 45°C, touching 48°C in bad years. The loo — a scorching desert wind — makes outdoor activity between 11am and 5pm genuinely dangerous. Sandstorms can reduce visibility to metres. Hotels drop prices dramatically but even locals stay indoors. Only visit if stranded or masochistic.
The May story
There is almost no tourist case for May Bikaner. If circumstances bring you here, your survival guide: never leave AC accommodation between 11am-5pm, hydrate obsessively (3-4 litres minimum), carry a wet cloth for your neck, and wear loose cotton. Early morning (5-7am) is the only window for outdoor sights. The local population shifts to nocturnal patterns — evening bazaars come alive after 8pm when temperatures drop to a merely hot 35°C. The one bright spot: Bikaner's kulfi and falooda are exceptional and you'll appreciate them more than any winter tourist ever could. Hotel prices bottom out at Rs 400-600 for decent rooms. The fort and temples are effectively deserted — surreal to have World Heritage-calibre architecture completely to yourself.
