Caution
Bikaner in April
Rajasthan, India
April marks the beginning of Bikaner's brutal summer. Temperatures hit 38-42°C and the desert wind carries fine sand that gets into everything. Tourist numbers collapse. Junagarh Fort becomes an oven by noon. The Karni Mata rat temple at Deshnoke (30km away) is manageable in early morning only. This is survival tourism, not leisure.
The April story
April Bikaner is for the committed. If you're here, start every sightseeing day at sunrise (5:30am) and be indoors by 10:30am. Resume after 4pm. Junagarh Fort opens at 10am, which is already late — negotiate early entry if staying at nearby heritage hotels. The rat temple is surprisingly cool inside (thick stone walls) and tolerable midday when other sites aren't. Bikaner's famous sweets — rasgulla and ghevar — taste better when you're heat-exhausted and sugar-deprived. Budget hotels run Rs 500-800 as demand craters. AC is non-negotiable. Carry oral rehydration salts. The one April advantage: you'll have Junagarh Fort nearly to yourself, which is extraordinary for a fort of this calibre.
