May is Amritsar turning hostile. Temperatures hit 40-45°C, the loo wind blows hot and dry from Rajasthan, and the city's flat terrain offers zero shade relief. The Golden Temple's marble walkway becomes too hot for bare feet by 9AM — the gurdwara provides carpet runners, but the dash from shade to shade is real. The Wagah ceremony shifts to 5:30PM but the bleachers bake in late afternoon sun.
The May story
The Golden Temple at night is May's redemption. After 9PM, the temperature drops to a bearable 30°C, the gold dome reflects the illumination in the still sarovar, and the kirtan reaches its most meditative quality with smaller, more devoted crowds. The 2AM visit — when the temple is quietest — is available to those willing to adjust their schedule around the heat. The langar hall operates 24 hours and the volunteers cooking in 45°C heat deserve a different level of respect. Practically: breakfast at Kanha Dhaba before 8AM (the kulchas taste identical regardless of heat), Golden Temple visit either early morning or late night, Wagah at 5:30PM when the sun is lower. Skip midday outdoor sightseeing entirely. Jallianwala Bagh is manageable early morning. The Partition Museum is air-conditioned and becomes your midday refuge. Lassi from Giani di Hatti or Ahuja Lassi is no longer recreational — it's medical. May is survivable if you're strategic, but it's not the Amritsar you'll remember fondly.
