Srinagar vs Gulmarg

Lake houseboats vs snow meadows — 50km apart, totally different

4 min read1 March 2026

Two Worlds, 50km Apart

Srinagar and Gulmarg are often mentioned together but deliver completely different experiences. One is a lake city with Mughal gardens. The other is a snow-covered meadow with India's best skiing. Here's how they compare on real data.

Srinagar — The Lake City

Best months: Apr-Jun, Sep-Nov (5/5)

Vibe: Houseboats on Dal Lake, shikara rides, Mughal gardens, bustling markets

Budget: ₹2,500-8,000/night for houseboats, ₹800-2,000 for hotels

Altitude: 1,585m — no acclimatization needed

Srinagar is Kashmir's cultural heart. Dal Lake houseboats are the signature experience — floating markets come to your door at sunrise. Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh are Mughal-era gardens that peak in spring with tulip blooms (Asia's largest tulip garden opens in April).

The old city has wooden mosques, papier-mache workshops, and some of the best Wazwan cuisine in India. Rogan josh at a local dhaba here costs ₹200 and beats any restaurant version.

Kids score: 4/5. Shikara rides, gardens, and the gentle pace make it family-friendly.

Gulmarg — The Meadow of Flowers (and Snow)

Best months: Dec-Feb for skiing (5/5), Jun-Aug for meadows (4/5)

Vibe: Snow sports, Gondola ride, alpine meadows, quiet

Budget: ₹3,000-12,000/night, skiing gear rental ₹1,500-3,000/day

Altitude: 2,650m — mild altitude, no issues for most

Gulmarg has Asia's highest operating Gondola (3,979m at Phase 2). In winter, it's India's only real skiing destination — 3km runs, powder snow, and a fraction of the cost of European resorts. A week of skiing with equipment, hotel, and food runs about ₹40,000-60,000.

In summer, the meadow blooms with wildflowers. It's a golf course at 2,650m — one of the highest in the world. Less crowded than Srinagar, more peaceful.

Kids score: 3/5. Great for older kids who can ski or trek. Limited activities for very young children in winter.

The Verdict

Do both. They're 50km apart and complement each other perfectly. Start in Srinagar for 2-3 days (lake, gardens, food), then drive to Gulmarg for 2 days (Gondola, skiing or meadows). This is the optimal Kashmir trip.
