Char Dham vs off-season — why pilgrimage timing isn't travel timing

Uttarakhand is split: the pilgrimage circuit (Char Dham, Kedarnath, Badrinath) runs May-October. The rest of the state has a different rhythm entirely.

May-June: Char Dham Opens (Score 5/5 for pilgrimage)

Kedarnath opens late April/early May with enormous energy. Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri follow. Massive crowds — helicopter bookings months ahead. If you're going for darshan, this is when.

September-October: The Sweet Spot (Score 5/5 across the board)

Post-monsoon. Rishikesh rafting reopens. Auli gets crystal-clear Nanda Devi views. Chopta meadows are green. Kedarnath is quieter (crowds thin after monsoon). Valley of Flowers has its last blooms in September. October adds autumn colour. This is Uttarakhand at its best.

July-August: Monsoon Reality (Score 1-2/5)

The 2013 Kedarnath disaster. The annual landslides on NH58. Flash floods in Rishikesh. The monsoon in Uttarakhand isn't romantic — it's dangerous. Roads close without warning. The Ganga goes into spate. The one exception: Valley of Flowers peaks in August (score 5/5) — but getting there is the gamble.

December-March: Winter Quiet (Score 3-5/5 varies)

Auli skiing (5/5 in Jan-Feb). Rishikesh yoga season (3-4/5). Mussoorie quiet and cold. Char Dham temples closed (Kedarnath closes around Diwali). This is a different Uttarakhand — smaller, quieter, focused on the lower-altitude destinations.
