The stay decisions worth flagging in Nainital.
Nainital has no Taj, Oberoi, or IHCL property—so the usual chain upgrade ladder doesn't apply here. The real spend decision is between The Naini Retreat (₹8,000–20,000+, Leisure Hotels) and Namah Nainital (₹9,000–18,000+, Radisson Individuals Retreats). The Naini Retreat sits on a former Maharaja of Pilibhit estate at 1,995m and earns its rate through the Maharaja terrace, Kumaoni cuisine, and a heritage building that larger competitors can't replicate—but you'll need a shuttle to reach Mall Road and the colonial staircase layout makes it a poor fit if anyone in your group has mobility limits. Namah gives you 67 rooms, a free shuttle, and an 11-minute walk to Naini Lake; the Radisson Individuals Retreats branding signals a standardised service floor that The Naini Retreat's independent staff can miss on busy April weekends. At roughly the same nightly rate, pick The Naini Retreat for the terrace and the heritage building; pick Namah if you want lake-area access without shuttle dependency. Neither property has a pool. Neither is worth upgrading further—there is no higher tier available in Nainital as of April 2026.
The Naini Retreat
Lake-facing rooms with colonial design sensibility and the most reliable dining in Nainital, without the resort sprawl.
Meadows Homestay
Owner-run, local recommendations for trekking, home-cooked meals, and genuine Kumaoni hospitality at half the hotel markup.
Khans Hotel
Fifty metres from Nainital Lake's main promenade and the boat dock, zero need for transfers within town.
Snow View Estate (Cottage Stays)
Hillside apple orchards with working farm activities and stargazing on clearing nights—Nainital's rare non-urban pocket.
