Kerala's driest sanctuary. Rain shadow zone — looks nothing like the rest of Kerala. Only habitat of the Grizzled Giant Squirrel. Thoovanam Falls trek. Marayoor sandalwood forests. The anti-Kerala.
A cliff-edge viewpoint at 1,880m looking down 2,000 feet into the Western Ghats descent towards Theni district. On clear winter mornings (December-February, 7-9am) the entire Bodi-Theni plain is visible. This is the historic terminal of the 1902 Kundala Valley Railway (Munnar-Top Station monorail, decommissioned 1924) — concrete plinth markers of the old rail station survive 100m from the viewpoint. ₹20 Kerala Tourism entry; open sunrise to sunset.
A 1,200m-altitude valley pull-off on the original 1880s Lockhart tea-route road, named after John Lockhart who surveyed the Kannan Devan tea estates. Views down the Pallivasal valley with three tea factories visible. The viewpoint chai stalls run a small Idukki-coffee outlet — single-origin Anachal estate coffee at ₹40/cup. Best at 7-10am before mist closes in. Free, open 24 hours.

Munnar has a taxi stand at the bus station. Local tour (Eravikulam + Top Station + dam): ₹2800. Half-day: ₹1500. Kochi drop: ₹4500. Thekkady drop: ₹3500. Chinnar day trip: ₹2800. Madurai drop: ₹5000. Ola/Uber don't operate in Munnar town.
Hotels accept check-in from noon. No permits for Munnar. Kerala requires no domestic tourism permits in general. Foreigners register at hotels (routine). Dress: light cotton + warm layer essential (evenings 15°C, days 25°C average). Rain gear Jun–Sep non-negotiable.
UPI works in Munnar town on Jio/BSNL. Tea estates (Kolukkumalai, Lockhart entry) cash-only. Temple donations cash. Mattupetty boating cash-only.
Old Munnar has 4 ATMs (SBI, Federal Bank, South Indian Bank). Generally reliable. Top Station + Kolukkumalai: no ATMs.
Old Munnar market 8am–8pm. KDHP Tea Museum Tue–Sun 9am–4pm (closed Mondays + select holidays). Restaurants 10am–10pm. Rapsy 12pm–10pm.
Malayalam is the local language. Hindi understood but not fluently. English universally spoken by hotel staff, taxi drivers, tour operators. Tamil widely spoken (Munnar had Tamil plantation labor history). Foreigners have zero friction.
Jio and BSNL both functional. Hotel Wi-Fi generally works. Tea estates have patchy signal — BSNL best. Monsoon can disrupt broadband for days.

The tea pluckers (mostly women) who work the Munnar estates are walking encyclopedias of tea. Some families have plucked for Tata Tea for three generations. Ask your plantation stay to arrange a morning with the pluckers — you will never drink tea the same way.
FESTIVALS · BY THE MONTH
The Neelakurinji flower (Strobilanthes kunthiana) blooms once every 12 years, covering entire hillsides in blue-purple. The last bloom was 2018, next expected around 2030. When it happens, it is one of nature's greatest spectacles.
Eravikulam National Park by 8am (parking fills by 10am). Home to Nilgiri tahr (endangered). ₹150 Indians / ₹450 foreigners, entry via the ticketed bus to Rajamalai 12km from main entrance. The park CLOSES Feb 1–April (tahr calving) — check before you go. Morning slot has the most active wildlife.
Kannan Devan Tea Museum (KDHP, on way back to town) — ₹100 entry, 45 min walk-through covering 1895 British-era tea history + a live factory tour. Ends with first-flush tasting. Lunch at Rapsy Restaurant (Old Munnar, known for Kerala parotta + beef roast — Munnar is Christian-majority so beef is on menus).
Top Station viewpoint (32km from Munnar, 1h drive, on Kerala-Tamil Nadu border) — 1880m altitude, panoramic views across to Tamil Nadu plains. Clear weather (usually mornings only) makes or breaks it. Or: Echo Point + Mattupetty Dam (closer, 13km).
Return to Munnar town. Dinner at Rapsy or Saravana Bhavan (vegetarian institution). Skip Old Munnar market shopping — tourist traps. Tea shopping at KDHP's own shop (next to museum) for quality.
If weather turns
Monsoon (Jun–mid-Sep) Munnar is misted-out with daily rain. Views close; hiking stops. But: it's the cheapest, emptiest, and arguably most beautiful time — the tea gardens are emerald green. Indoor fallback: Tea Museum, Lockhart Tea Estate drive-through (paved road), Christ Church (1910, Anglican). Spice garden tours work in rain.

Excellent. Moderate altitude (1600m), tea estates are pram-friendly for paved stretches, Eravikulam tahr viewing is a kid magnet, boating at Mattupetty is family-friendly. Climate is mild. Medical: KDHP Hospital Munnar is adequate for minor issues; Kochi (4h) for anything serious.
Best for
Munnar is the gateway to the Western Ghats. Combine with Kochi (backwaters) and Thekkady (wildlife) for the classic Kerala triangle. 5 days covers all three.

India's second major tea origin (after Darjeeling). KDHP is India's oldest tea company (1880s). The scale of terraced gardens here exceeds Darjeeling. Kolukkumalai is the world's highest organic tea estate.

Eravikulam has India's best Nilgiri tahr viewing. Chinnar + Marayoor adds sandalwood + prehistoric rock art. Combined with Periyar/Thekkady and Parambikulam (Tamil Nadu side), it's a serious Western Ghats wildlife circuit.
Best for
Jun–Aug monsoon Munnar is empty, cheap, and impossibly green. Low tourist traffic, tea gardens at peak emerald, mist-draped viewpoints. Harder logistically but visually peerless.
