Lachen
Sikkim · northeast · 2,750m
North Sikkim base for Gurudongmar and Chopta Valley, Lachungpa tribal village.
Why Special
Lachen is a remote Lachungpa tribal village at 2,750m that serves as the mandatory overnight base for Gurudongmar Lake and Chopta Valley. The village is governed by a traditional Dzumsa system — a self-governing council that predates Indian democracy and still settles disputes, manages tourism, and enforces local laws. Homestays are the primary accommodation; there are no hotels in the conventional sense. The drive from Gangtok (6-7 hours, 110 km) follows the Teesta River through progressively narrower valleys. There is no ATM, no reliable cell network, and the PHC handles only basic cases. The road is frequently blocked by landslides during monsoon. Lachen is not a destination in itself but the gateway to some of the most extreme high-altitude landscapes accessible by road in India.

The stay decisions worth flagging in Lachen.
Lachen is a North Sikkim village at 2,750m — the overnight base for Gurudongmar Lake day-trips. Inner Line Permit required (obtained in Gangtok, minimum 1 night Gangtok stay before heading north). Stay scene is small hotels and homestays booked via Gangtok-based tour operators as packages. No luxury alternatives.
Lachen has no luxury hotels — permits require overnight stays, but all options are similar small hotels (Udaan Tashi Gakhil Resort, Yarlam, Royal Khangri) or village homestays. Book via tour operator as part of the Gurudongmar package — independent bookings are rare and difficult.
Udaan Tashi Gakhil Resort / tour-package hotels
One of the better-reviewed small hotels at Lachen. Most visitors book as part of a Gangtok → Lachen → Gurudongmar package rather than direct. Basic mountain-village comforts — permit-controlled area means no brand hotels.
Yak Hotel Lachen
Family-run operation with clean rooms, local knowledge from owners, and meals that cost less than ₹300—reliable value in a place where options are thin.
Lachen Homestay (Dorje's Place)
Located 50m from Lachen's main bazaar and the trailhead to Gurudongmar Lake, cutting trek prep time and letting you walk to the village market on foot.
No x-factor pick here that's worth the flag. See alternatives below.
