Markha Valley Trek is a hard 6-day, 65 km trek, topping out at 5,150 m. The route takes in Two high passes — Ganda La (4960m) and Kongmaru La (5150m); Traditional Ladakhi villages with homestays; Hemis National Park — snow leopard territory; Ancient monasteries and prayer flag-draped passes. Best months: June–September. Watch points: Two passes above 5000m — serious AMS risk. Acclimatize in Leh 3-4 days; river crossings can be thigh-deep in July-August — trekking sandals needed; no phone network for entire trek duration. Fitness level: high, permits required, not recommended for children under 16. Nearest hospital: SNM Hospital Leh — accessible only at start (Spituk) and end (Shang Sumdo). No medical help on trek. Network coverage: Zero mobile coverage for entire trek. BSNL at Spituk and Shang Sumdo only. Satellite phone recommended.
