Haflong Hills Trek
Haflong Hills Trek is a moderate single-day, 8 km trek, topping out at 680 m. The route takes in Assam only hill station; Haflong Lake; Jatinga mystery; Dimasa tribal villages. Best months: January–March and October–December. Watch points: Leeches in monsoon; guide recommended; limited phone signal. Fitness level: moderate, suitable for children with adult supervision. Pair it with a visit to Jatinga village—8 km away—where seasonally migratory birds plummet from the sky in inexplicable numbers, a phenomenon that has puzzled ornithologists for decades. The trek works best October–December, when leeches retreat and tribal homestays in the foothills offer insight into Dimasa culture without the monsoon complications.
