Rajasthan Highlights

The essential Rajasthan loop in a week: Pink City, Blue City, Golden City, Lake City. Four cities, four forts, four completely different vibes. This is the condensed version of the 10-day route — you skip Pushkar and the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer return leg. Still excellent.

Logistics

Fly into Jaipur. Fly out of Udaipur. Hire a driver for the full trip (₹2,500-3,500/day) — intercity buses exist but eat your time. Or use trains: Jaipur-Jodhpur (5hrs), Jodhpur-Jaisalmer (5hrs). Jaisalmer-Udaipur has no direct train — drive or fly via Jodhpur. Oct-Feb ONLY.

Day by Day

1
Airport → Jaipur· 15km

Arrive Jaipur. Amber Fort (go straight from airport, morning light is best). Afternoon: City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar. Evening: Nahargarh Fort sunset. Johari Bazaar for dinner.

2
Jaipur → Jodhpur· 335km

Morning drive to Jodhpur (5-6hrs). Arrive by lunch. Afternoon: Mehrangarh Fort — genuinely one of the best forts in India. Walk through the Blue City lanes below the fort. Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell. Overnight Jodhpur.

3
Jodhpur → Jaisalmer· 285km

Drive to Jaisalmer (5hrs through the Thar). Arrive afternoon. Jaisalmer Fort — unlike other forts, people live inside this one. Walk the lanes, find the Jain temples (intricate carvings), Patwon ki Haveli. Sunset from the fort walls.

4
Jaisalmer → Jaisalmer· 80km

Morning: Gadisar Lake. Afternoon: Sam Sand Dunes (42km from town). Camel safari into the dunes. Watch the sunset. Stay for desert camping under the stars — the Milky Way is absurd out here.

5
Jaisalmer → Udaipur· 550km

The long haul. Jaisalmer to Udaipur is a full day drive (9-10hrs). Start early. Stop at Barmer or Pali for lunch. Arrive Udaipur by evening. This is the one hard day — but the alternative (backtracking to Jodhpur) isn't shorter. Check into a Lake Pichola-facing hotel. Rooftop dinner.

6
Udaipur → Udaipur· 20km

City Palace (massive, allow 2-3hrs). Jag Mandir boat ride on Lake Pichola. Fateh Sagar Lake. Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) sunset — the drive up is scenic. Saheliyon ki Bari garden if you have kids. Evening: walk Gangaur Ghat.

7
Udaipur → Airport· 25km

Morning free: revisit the lake, last shopping (Udaipur miniature paintings, silver jewellery). Depart from Udaipur airport.
