Puducherry
The former French settlement on the Tamil coast — now a 4-district union territory (the Tamil-coast town, Karaikal, plus Mahé in Kerala and Yanam in Andhra). The White Town keeps mustard-yellow colonial walls, French-named streets and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram; Auroville (10 km north) is Mirra Alfassa's universal township and the Matrimandir's gold-disc dome; Karaikal sits 130 km south. Tamil-French signage is standard; the local Tamil dialect is largely unchanged from the 18th century. 3 destinations across the territory.
