Central 1.5km seaside walk — the heart of Pondicherry after 6 PM
Not a swimming beach (rocky seawall + rough surf). It's a walking promenade. Closed to traffic from 6 PM — that's when it comes alive with street food, joggers, French expats, and tourists. Gandhi statue, old lighthouse, and War Memorial mark the stretch.
The surf beach 7km north — India's oldest surf school runs from here
Unlike Promenade, this is a real beach — sandy, surfable. Kallialay Surf School (1-on-1 lessons, board rentals) operates here; small but well-run. Cafes on the road above. Quieter than Chennai beaches, busier than you'd hope on weekends.
Sandbar beach reached only by a 30-min boat from Chunnambar backwaters
Not walkable — the boat from Chunnambar Boathouse is the only access (fee includes return). Narrow strip of golden sand between backwater and sea. No shops, no restaurants — bring water and snacks. Busy Dec-Feb, quieter weekdays.
The Mother's 1968 experimental township — spiritual, divisive, globally unique
Founded by Mirra Alfassa (the Mother) in 1968 as an experiment in human unity. The Matrimandir (inner chamber, golden orb) is the spiritual center — entry requires a prior visit to the visitor center and booking. Around 3,000 residents from 50+ countries. Cafes, bakeries, pottery studios, and organic farms are open to visitors.

Founded 1926. The samadhi (resting place) of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother sits in the inner courtyard, covered in flowers. Quiet, short visit — silent meditation only. Separate bookstore stocks the complete works in 10+ languages.

Named after Tamil poet Subramania Bharathi. Surrounded by the French Consulate, Puducherry Museum, and Raj Nivas (governor's residence). Morning yoga, evening couples, midday pensioners. The Aayi Mandapam monument in the center is a Pondy icon.

India's only Danish colonial town — most people don't know Denmark had Indian colonies.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
Fort Dansborg (1620), India's oldest Protestant church (1701). Tamil-Danish colonial architecture. Almost zero tourists. A unique piece of Indian history invisible to mainstream travel.
Matrimandir construction began 1971 under Sri Aurobindo's spiritual collaborator The Mother (Mirra Alfassa); finished 2008. 12 meditation chambers around a single inner crystal chamber (Inner Chamber requires advance booking + 7-day permit). The Viewing Point is the standard tourist access — quiet, open 9am-12.30pm + 2-4pm, closed Sundays. The Banyan Tree on the path was planted 1968 at Auroville's founding. Allow 90 min including the Visitor Centre exhibit.
Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) — Bengali nationalist turned spiritual philosopher, founder of Integral Yoga — settled in French Pondicherry 1910 to escape British arrest, founded the Ashram 1926 with The Mother. Their joint Samadhi (white marble crypt covered in flowers daily) is the focal point of the main building courtyard. Public access 8am-12pm + 2-6pm. Strict silence, modest dress, no photography inside, no phones beyond the entrance. The adjacent Sri Aurobindo Ashram Bookstore (Rue de la Marine) is the largest source of Aurobindo + Mother writings in print.

White Town cafes + restaurants: 8am–10pm (French hours 12–3, 7–10:30 common at formal places). Ashram bookshop: 9am–12, 3–7. Heritage museums: 10am–5pm (closed Sundays or Mondays — varies). Auroville Visitor Centre: 9:30am–5pm daily.
Tamil is local. French survives in White Town older Catholic families + some signage. Hindi limited. English universally spoken in hotels + tourist areas. Auroville is multilingual (French + English + German + Italian communities). Foreigners face zero friction.
Jio + Airtel both strong 4G. Heritage hotels have reliable Wi-Fi. Cafe des Arts, Coromandel Cafe, Baker Street all remote-work friendly. Auroville has good connectivity at Visitor Centre and hub buildings.

A French bakery created in 2008 on Rue Bussy, run on the recipes of a family of French bakers since 1788 — Baker Street is consistently called the best French bakery in Pondicherry and ranks #1 among the city's bakeries on TripAdvisor. The croissants and pain au chocolat are the reason it is on every Pondy food list.
Tip: Buy croissants and macarons fresh in the morning before they sell out. Pricey by Indian standards but the baking is genuinely French. There are two Rue Bussy shops plus a Beach Road outlet. Cash + cards.

Opened 2009 in an old Franco-Tamil house on Rue Suffren in the French Quarter — Cafe des Arts turned a historic colonial home into a whimsical Parisian-style cafe with vintage furniture and a courtyard. It is the most photographed cafe in Pondicherry and the default spot for a leisurely French breakfast in White Town.
Tip: Come for breakfast or mid-morning — it gets crowded and only opens roughly 9am-6pm, closed some weekdays. The crepes and the courtyard seating are the draw. Cash + cards; expect a wait in season.
Signature: Continental and French plates in a heritage pink-mansion garden
A cafe set in a restored pink colonial mansion in White Town, with garden seating under the trees — Coromandel Cafe is a regular on Pondicherry's must-visit cafe lists, valued as much for the heritage-house setting as for its continental and French menu.
Tip: Best in the evening when the garden is lit — a relaxed spot for a long coffee or light dinner. The pink-mansion courtyard is the reason to come. Cash + cards.

A long-running pure-vegetarian South Indian restaurant on Mission Street, part of the Hotel Surguru group — the reliable Indian-food counterpoint to White Town's French and continental cafes. Locals and travellers rate it for some of the best dosas in town at honest prices, in a clean air-conditioned setting.
Tip: When you have had enough croissants and French breakfasts, this is the place for a proper South Indian dosa-and-filter-coffee meal. The dosa range is the order. Cash + cards + UPI.
Signature: Wood-fired pizza on organic spelt dough with kitchen-garden toppings
An Italian restaurant and pizzeria using organic spelt dough, extra-virgin olive oil and produce from its own kitchen garden — Tanto is Pondicherry's best-known address for genuine wood-fired pizza, set in a leafy garden. It runs branches in White Town and Auroville.
Tip: Order the wood-fired pizza on spelt crust — the organic, no-canned-ingredients approach is what sets Tanto apart. The garden setting is pleasant in the evening; book in season. Cash + cards.

A fine-dining restaurant inside a restored heritage hotel on Rue Suffren in White Town — Villa Shanti is one of Pondicherry's top tables for an upscale evening, serving French and North Indian cooking in an atmospheric colonial-mansion courtyard. The go-to address for a special dinner in the French Quarter.
Tip: Book ahead for dinner, especially weekends — the courtyard tables are the ones to ask for. The most polished fine-dining experience in White Town if you want one celebratory meal. Cash + cards.
