Varanasi in a day — sunrise boat + ghats + evening aarti

Pre-dawn

Sunrise boat from Assi Ghat or Dashashwamedh Ghat at 5:15am (₹400–1500 for 90 min). The Ganga turns gold as the sun rises over Kashi. You'll pass: Harishchandra Ghat + Manikarnika Ghat (the burning ghats — do not photograph) + Dashashwamedh + Assi. This is the one Varanasi experience nothing else matches.

Morning

Breakfast at Blue Lassi (legendary tiny shop near Manikarnika, 4 generations, ₹60 for a lassi bigger than a face) OR Kashi Chat Bhandar (chaat institution). Walk the ghats north from Assi to Dashashwamedh (4km, 2 hours) — see morning worship + yoga sessions + cricket.

Midday

Kashi Vishwanath Temple (2004/2022 corridor expansion makes access much easier now) — one of 12 Jyotirlingas + most important Shiva temple in India. Security tight: no phones, bags, leather, cameras — lockers available. 45 min to 2h depending on crowds. Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple (3km south, 1 hour).

Afternoon

Banaras Hindu University (BHU, 5km south) — 1916 Madan Mohan Malaviya campus, walk through Vishwanath Temple inside the university (replica, more peaceful), BHU Art Museum (closed Sundays). Ramnagar Fort across the river (optional, fading museum).

Evening

Dashashwamedh Ghat Ganga Aarti from 6:45pm (winter) / 7:15pm (summer) — 45 min ritual with 7 priests, fire, conch, bells. Book boat for aarti viewing from water (₹500–1500 for guaranteed view) — ghat-side viewing is packed. Dinner in old city — Baati Chokha, Pizzeria Vaatika Cafe (for foreign palates), or Kerala Cafe (South Indian).

itinerary.badWeather

Summer (May–Jun) 45°C+ heat limits ghat walking to 5–10am + after 6pm. Monsoon (Jul–Sep) floods ghats — lower ghats (Assi, Dashashwamedh) submerge; river tours cancelled. Winter (Dec–Jan) fog cancels sunrise boats some days. Indoor fallbacks: BHU Art Museum, Sarnath Archaeological Museum, Bharat Kala Bhavan, Ramnagar Fort museum.
