February is the coldest stretch — Dharamshala dips to 1-9°C, and the occasional snowfall reaches even the lower town (though it melts within hours). The Dhauladhar peaks are heavily snow-loaded and dramatic when clouds break. Kangra Valley stays brown and dormant. The first signs of spring appear only in the last week — almond trees start budding. Tourist numbers stay below 8,000. This is bargain-basement Himachal.
Live in Dharamshala
Near Bhagsu Nag Temple and Waterfall with stunning Himalayan views, relaxing garden, bonfire pit and on-site Unbox Cafe
A backpacker legend. Simple rooms in a family home above McLeod. The terrace has unblocked Dhauladhar views. The family has been hosting travelers for 20+ years. Breakfast included and surprisingly good. Book the corner room.
Tibetan arts institute with a gorgeous cafe and authentic handicraft shop. Watch thangka painters work, buy genuine Tibetan crafts (not Chinese imports), and have lunch in the Japanese garden. The most peaceful hour in the Dharamshala area.
Signaturealfresco poolside multi-cuisine buffet
On match days the deck is reserved for ticket-holders; on non-match days walk in — the poolside terrace at sunset is the proper experience. Coffee shop 'Straight Drive' (11am-11pm) is the cheaper way in if a full dinner is too much.
Signaturecheesy baked momos
Skip the pasta and pizza in favour of the cheesy baked momos — it's the dish reviewers actually return for. The rooftop opens up after 5pm when the kitchen heat drops.
SignatureSunday Himachali dham
Dham only runs Sundays around lunchtime — show up by 1pm or it's gone. On other days order siddu (steamed walnut-stuffed buns) with desi ghee; the chow-chow tourist menu is fine but skip it.
SignatureGujarati thali
The thali is what to order — paneer-mix-veg-chola-dahi-dal-jeera-rice-papad-sweet-roti for around ₹350. À la carte service is slow; the thali comes out in five minutes flat.
Main market area of Dharamshala with local handicrafts, Tibetan goods, and street food stalls.
Ancient Shiva temple near a waterfall, built by King Bhagsu. Popular pilgrimage and trekking spot.
One of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world at 4,108 ft with snow-capped Dhauladhar backdrop.
One of the oldest and largest forts in India, dating back to the Trigarta Kingdom. Mentioned in Alexander's war records.
Tibetan cultural center preserving traditional arts — thangka painting, metalwork, woodcarving. Beautiful Japanese gardens.
