March begins thawing Kinnaur — -5 to 10°C. Snow melts on south-facing slopes. Waterfalls appear everywhere as the accumulated winter releases. The Sutlej runs high with snowmelt. The road from Shimla improves weekly. Villages emerge from winter: orchards being prepared, livestock returning to pastures. The Kinner Kailash massif still carries full snow. March is winter's last gesture and spring's first.

Where to eat

  • Papu Ka Dhaba

    Legendary
    Tapri · ₹

    Signaturealoo paratha breakfast

Stop here, not Powari, if you've started from Shimla — Tapri is the cleaner of the two NH-5 dhaba clusters and parking is easier. Cash only; the queue moves fast because everyone orders the same three things.

  • Hotel Snow View Restaurant Reckong Peo

Reckong Peo district HQ market · ₹₹

SignatureKinnauri thali — buckwheat ogla roti with rajma and chutney

Ogla roti is heavier than wheat and pairs with rajma not dal — order half-portion if not used to buckwheat. Open 7am for early Kalpa-bound shared-taxi passengers.

  • Lungta Cafe

    Pooh · ₹

    Signaturechicken biryani

Reviews are mixed — kitchen quality depends on the day. Order what's freshly cooked (ask the staff what came in this morning) and skip pre-made items. Open 12am–11:59pm officially but call ahead if arriving late evening.

  • Mountain's Pizza Club

    Reckong Peo · ₹₹

    Signaturewood-style pizza

Open 10am — useful for the road-out-of-Kinnaur lunch slot before climbing to Kalpa. Same brand as the Shimla outlet; it's a small franchise rather than a one-off.
