May is hot Sarnath — 32-42°C. The UP plains heat blankets everything. The archaeological park is best visited at dawn or dusk. The museum remains the day's centre of gravity. International Buddhist visitors thin out. The site feels suspended in heat haze. The evening light on the Dhamek Stupa, when temperatures drop to 35°C, offers respite. Stay in Varanasi's air-conditioned hotels and taxi out.
