The annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath ice Shiva lingam at 3,888m begins from Pahalgam via the traditional Chandanwari route, with lakhs of pilgrims passing through.
Why it mattersOne of Hinduism's holiest pilgrimages; the naturally forming ice lingam in Amarnath Cave has drawn devotees for thousands of years.
July is Amarnath Yatra peak. Pahalgam is a transit camp. Pilgrim traffic dominates everything. The monsoon arrives—rain, clouds, and greenery. Temperatures: 14-24°C. The valleys are at maximum lushness but access is affected by both crowds and weather. Landslides on the Yatra route are common.

Order the kashmiri wazwan rather than the multi-cuisine pages — the kitchen has been doing rogan josh and gushtaba for nearly a century. Picnic lunches by the Lidder can be arranged through the hotel concierge.
