Caution
Zanskar Valley in December
Ladakh, India
December: Zanskar in deep freeze — -20 to -10°C. The valley is completely isolated. The river is approaching freeze but the Chadar hasn't formed yet. December is the dead month — too late for the road, too early for the frozen river. The monasteries and villages survive on stored supplies. The isolation is absolute. January's Chadar season is weeks away.
The December story
December deepens the freeze. The Zanskar River flows slower, its edges icing. The valley at -20°C is preparing for the Chadar's formation — the ice that will become January's walking surface is building molecule by molecule. The monasteries glow with butter lamps in the darkness of short winter days. The villages are snowbound. December Zanskar is inaccessible and irreducible: a Buddhist valley at 3,660m, cut off from the world, surviving on stored grain, prayer, and the knowledge that the frozen river will soon become a highway. The Chadar operators are advertising January-February bookings. If you want the frozen trek, book now — popular dates sell out months ahead.
