Why Special
Yuksom is where Sikkim began â three lamas crowned the first Chogyal (king) here in 1642 at the Norbugang Coronation Throne, which still stands under a massive cypress tree. Today it is the only starting point for the Goechala trek, a 90-km round trip that ends with a sunrise view of Kanchenjunga (8,586m) from Dzongri and Goechala Pass at 4,940m. The village itself sits at 1,780m in a lush valley with monasteries (Dubdi, the oldest in Sikkim, is a 45-minute uphill walk), prayer wheels, and zero commercialization. Unlike Pelling or Gangtok, Yuksom has no malls, no traffic, and no crowds â just trekkers, monks, and silence. The Khangchendzonga National Park office is here for permits.
