Yamunotri in April
Uttarakhand, India
April: the temple remains closed but preparations accelerate. The road from Barkot to Janki Chatti (38km) clears. The trek route from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri (6km) is being cleared of snow and debris. The hot springs area may be accessible for the adventurous but no temple services exist. The opening date (around Akshaya Tritiya in May) is announced.
The April story
The temple remains closed but the staging area activates. Barkot (the main staging town) is busy with pre-season preparation â hotels renovating, restaurants restocking, pony-wallahs grooming animals. The road to Janki Chatti may be fully clear by late April. The trek route is being prepared by the temple committee. April is when to book May-June accommodation â Janki Chatti has limited rooms and the Char Dham opening week fills fast. The hot springs near the temple are geologically fascinating year-round â the conjunction of glacial melt and volcanic heat creates unique mineral conditions. The Yamuna at its youngest, running from ice to boiling water within a few hundred metres, is a geography lesson no textbook matches. April Barkot itself (1,220m) is pleasant â a small Garhwal town with mountain views.
