Monsoon rains flood coastal beaches and obscure temple visits through July
July in Udupi is the year's wettest stretch. Rainfall averages 1100mm across 26-28 wet days, often as 6-12 hour sustained deluges with cyclonic-cell wind. Daytime 25-28C, humidity 93 percent. Malpe Beach under Karnataka Tourism red-flag advisory — sea bathing prohibited, lifeguards withdrawn. St Mary's Island ferry suspended for the monsoon season. Sri Krishna Matha (the 1238 CE Madhvacharya foundation that anchors Udupi's identity, the eight ashta-matha rotation currently in Sri Krishnapura Matha tenure) continues full darshan operations — 4.30am-1.30pm and 3-9pm windows, the Kanakana Kindi small-window darshan, the morning Nirmalya at 6am, the evening Mahapooja at 7pm — but pilgrim flow at year-low. The ashta-matha annadana free-meal services continue daily. Mitra Samaj (Car Street, 1920 founding), Diana Hotel, Mahalaxmi, Saraswathi Hotel all hold normal hours; Woodlands Restaurant; Manipal Hotel restaurants at Manipal University campus 5km out. Hotel rates at year-low: Paradise Isle Malpe ₹2.5-4k, Karavali ₹2-3k, town hotels ₹1.3-2.2k. The Konkan Railway stretch between Mangalore and Udupi runs at peak landslide-watch operating mode. Wait for late October.
