Tirupati in May
Andhra Pradesh, India
Extreme heat and long temple queues create dangerous dehydration risk in May
May in Tirupati is the Rayalaseema heat dome peak. Daytime 38-40C, nights 27-28C, humidity 55 percent, rainfall under 50mm. Pre-monsoon dust storms hit the second fortnight; the seven-hill ascent road sees afternoon visibility drops. The Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Tirumala (853m elevation) holds 4-5C cooler than Tirupati town but Tirumala daytime still climbs to 33-35C. The 3,550-step Alipiri-Tirumala padayatra impossible — bare-stone trail surface hits 45-48C by 10am. AC bus (TTD-operated, ₹240 return from Alipiri, 30-min ascent) or private taxi the only viable ascent. Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple at Tiruchanoor workable only 5-9am and 6-10pm. Kapilatheertham tank-bath compresses to 5-8am. Sarva Darshan queues thin to 12-18 hours as pilgrim density drops; Special Entry ₹300 darshan walks under 2 hours. TTD accommodation at year-low: Tirumala cottages ₹400-2,500, Tirupati town hotels Marasa Sarovar ₹3-4,500, Fortune Kences ₹2,500-4,000. Functional only for pilgrims locked to specific lunar dates; the trip you came for cannot happen comfortably. October-March is dramatically better.
