Rudraprayag in January
Uttarakhand, India
January's cool mornings make the riverside temples ideal for unhurried exploration, but expect minimal crowds and sparse restaurant hours in this quiet town
January in Rudraprayag is cold and quiet — 2-14°C. The confluence of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers runs clear winter-blue. This is where the road to Kedarnath branches off, but the Kedarnath temple is closed until May. The town serves as a transit point for Char Dham pilgrims, but in January it's just a mountain town living its life. Jim Corbett famously hunted the man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag here in 1926.
The January story
January Rudraprayag rewards the curious transit traveller. The confluence viewing point (10-minute walk from town) shows the Mandakini and Alaknanda meeting in winter clarity — different temperatures, different mineral loads, visibly different colours merging. The Koteshwar Mahadev temple, carved into a riverside cave, is Rudraprayag's hidden gem — in January you'll share it with priests and local devotees only. The Jim Corbett connection is real: the man-eating leopard killed 125 people between 1918-1926, and Corbett's account is one of India's great adventure narratives. Read it before you visit. Hotels are basic (₹600-1,200) but functional. Rudraprayag is 141km from Rishikesh (5-6 hours by road) and works as an overnight stop on any Garhwal exploration.
