Kapileshwar Mahadev Cave Temple.
Pithoragarh visitors do the fort, Chandak hill and Mostamanu; Kapileshwar is a 3km drive plus 15-min walk and doesn't make most district tourism brochures.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
A Shiva shrine inside a natural cave on a ridge above Pithoragarh, named for the sage Kapil Muni who is said to have meditated here. The shivling sits 10m inside a dark cave reachable by a short uphill walk. The ridge above the cave gives the cleanest view of the entire Soar Valley below and the Panchachuli line on the horizon — same view as the Pithoragarh fort but without the entry queue. Best: Year-round; cave is climate-stable. Mar-Jun and Sep-Nov for clearest valley views. Mahashivratri sees a small local crowd.. Reach: 3km from Pithoragarh town toward Soar valley; ask for 'Kapileshwar Mahadev'. Last 500m on foot up a stone stairway.. Tip: Free entry. Carry a torch — the cave entry is genuinely dark. Bare feet inside the cave; floor is damp. Combine with the Pithoragarh fort (5km from here) for a half-day local-history loop..
