Palitana in May
Gujarat, India
Skip — May breaks the entire Palitana climb experience.
May is Palitana's most dangerous climbing month — peak Saurashtra heat at 26-40C, exposed Shatrunjaya basalt reaching surface temperatures of 55C+ in midday sun, and the 3,800-step ascent effectively closed for tourist use. Heat-stroke and dehydration risk extreme.
The May story
There's no version of May at Palitana that delivers the Jain-pilgrimage-on-Earth narrative properly. The 863 temples open, the Oswal Yatrik Gruh dharamshala operates, the Vijay Vilas Palace heritage stay continues with AC — but the cool pre-dawn climbs of November-February are gone, and even pre-dawn 4am climbs become sweat-heavy with the descent finishing in dangerous heat. Saurashtra circuit locals defer Palitana until October. Force-majeure travellers should restrict to 4am foot-climb starts with descent by 8am, use the Vijay Vilas Palace AC suites as the day-base, and treat the climb as a single-day commitment. The Hingraj Mata cave at the 2,500-step mark and the Adishwara summit need extraordinary fitness in May heat. The June Chaturmas closure looms.
