Nainital in January
Uttarakhand, India
January Nainital is cold, quiet, and occasionally dusted with snow. Temperatures drop to 1-3°C at night and rarely cross 10°C during the day. Naini Lake looks steel-grey under overcast skies, and Mall Road is nearly empty â most shops pull down shutters by 6 PM. The Haldwani-Nainital road (NH-87) stays open but can ice over near Bhowali after dark. Hotel rates bottom out at 40-50% of peak pricing. You will need proper thermals, not just a hoodie.
The January story
This is Nainital for people who actually want to be in a hill station, not a traffic jam. Snow View Point earns its name maybe 4-5 days this month â when it does, the entire Kumaon range appears in sharp white relief against blue sky. The ropeway runs but expect 15-minute waits at most, versus 2-hour queues in May. Tiffin Top walk is peaceful, pine-scented, and you will have the trail mostly to yourself. Naina Devi temple stays open and sees a handful of devoted pilgrims, not tourist hordes. The real play is renting a lakeside room with a heater, stocking up on Maggi and chai from the few open stalls, and watching fog roll across the water at dawn. Bhimtal, 15 km away, is even emptier â its lake reflects perfect mirror images of the surrounding hills on still mornings.
