Road access unreliable in deep snow; confirm connectivity before booking
February holds Munsiyari in winter's grip. Snow lingers. Temperatures: -5°C to 6°C. The Panchachuli massif, fully snow-covered, catches morning light in pink and gold. The town's few hundred permanent residents maintain their routines. Some trekking outfitters start planning for the April-June season.
The February story
February Munsiyari's sole agenda is the Panchachuli view and the silence. The five peaks—named for the five Pandava brothers' wives, who lit five cooking fires here during exile—are visible from multiple angles around town. The Darma Valley road (toward the Tibetan border) may be partially passable, offering walks into territory that few outsiders see. The local handloom weavers, mostly Shauka women, produce distinctive woolen shawls and blankets through winter—watching them work on backstrap looms is a cultural highlight. The town's single market street has a few provision shops and a chai stall that serves as the community gathering point. If the road from Thal is clear, the drive along the Gori Ganga gorge—one of Kumaon's most dramatic river valleys—is spectacular in winter light.
