Modhera Sun Temple in May
Gujarat, India
Skip — May Modhera is the worst month. Wait for November.
May is the heat ceiling for Modhera. Daytime 28-42C on the open Sun Temple complex, the sabha mandap dangerous beyond pre-7am dawn windows, and the Surya Kund a heat sink without shade. The destination is effectively closed.
The May story
May is Modhera at its worst. The North Gujarat plains push daytime temperatures to 28-42C with strong direct sun, very low humidity, and zero shade on the 11th-century Sun Temple's open complex. The sabha mandap offers partial shade but the Surya Kund stepped tank is fully exposed and the outer compound is unwalkable beyond pre-7am dawn windows. The kund water level drops with summer evaporation, reducing the reflection-photography possibility that defines January-February visits. Heat exhaustion risk is real for visitors who arrive mid-morning. The on-site GTDC Toran Modhera Resort operates at very reduced occupancy. Mehsana hotels (Hotel Apple Inn, Hotel Madhuram) shift focus to business travellers and AC-running rates climb on power load. Hotel rates remain low but no leisure rationale justifies the trade-off. The pre-monsoon dramatic sky in late May can deliver storm-cloud-and-temple photography for specialist visitors, but heat-tolerance is mandatory. The honest May verdict: don't plan Modhera in May unless on essential research fieldwork.
