Monsoon humidity lingers despite cooling temperatures, making temple walks uncomfortable
September post-Janmashtami Mathura exhales. The monsoon continues but weakens. Temperatures: 26-34°C. The city's devotional energy remains high but manageable. Radha Ashtami (Radha's birthday) falls about two weeks after Janmashtami, extending the festival season. The Yamuna is at peak monsoon level.
The September story
Radha Ashtami is Mathura's second major August-September celebration, focused on Radha—Krishna's eternal consort. The celebrations at Barsana (Radha's birthplace, 47 km) are significant and far less crowded than Janmashtami. The Radha Rani Temple in Barsana, one of the few temples in India dedicated to Radha independently, is beautifully decorated. September also brings the monsoon's retreat—by late month, skies clear, the Yamuna starts receding, and the ghats re-emerge. The post-festival period is excellent for museum visits, quiet temple exploration, and conversations with priests who have time between the big events. Mathura's bazaars sell festival leftovers at discounted prices.
