CONCERNS
Kundalika-river rafting from Mumbai/Pune — organised rafting operator (Vivanta, Suyash) is the safe format. Stag-weekender culture = don't walk strip alone.
EMERGENCY · SOURCE-VERIFIED
Dam across the Kundalika River that creates a reservoir. Dam releases provide the water flow for rafting in the gorge below. Viewpoint offers views of the reservoir and surrounding forested hills.
10km white-water rafting stretch through scenic gorge. Grade II-III rapids during monsoon release season (July-February). Multiple operators offer guided rafting trips with safety gear.

Trail through private farms. No signage.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
Hidden waterfall in a rocky amphitheater. The pool at the base is deep enough to swim. Trek through paddy fields and jungle. Feels undiscovered.
A 100 BCE - 200 CE Buddhist cave group on the western Sahyadri spur, 26 caves cut into the laterite cliff face — 9 viharas (monk cells), 1 chaitya (prayer hall with stone stupa), and various smaller rock-cut units. Inscriptions in Brahmi script reference Kanha and Nagamulanika of the Mahabhoja dynasty. Cave 1 + Cave 6 are the best preserved. ASI Group A; entry free. Climb is 80 stone steps from Mandad village.
A 15km Sahyadri ghat road threading the western edge of the Mulshi reservoir — 10+ named monsoon waterfalls between Jul-Sep, including the Tamhini main falls + the road-side curtain falls at km marker 7. Best Jul-Aug peak monsoon (extreme caution — landslides flag Jul-Aug, MMRDA road closes intermittently). Pune-side approach is the better-marked tourist trail; the Kolad-Mulshi backside is the offbeat read.

WHERE TO EAT · 3 VERIFIED PICKS
Signature: Konkan fish thali with vade and bhakri
Kolad town dhaba serving Konkan fish thali with rice-flour vade + jowar bhakri + sol kadi at reasonable prices — Outlook Traveller-recommended. The post-rafting lunch order for groups returning from the Kundalika 9am drop-off (the river is 12-15km from town).
Tip: Fish thali (₹250-300) + vade is the order; the Konkan thali here is closer to the Goan-Malvani style than the Maharashtrian dhaba norm. Open 7am-10pm. Cash + UPI.
Signature: Homestyle Maharashtrian rafting-camp meal
The flagship rafting camp on the Kundalika river (Village Kamat off Mulshi Road, Roha-Kolad) — homestyle Maharashtrian cuisine cooked with fresh local ingredients. Buffet style; open to non-resident rafting day-trippers who book the rafting + meal package. The natural lunch stop after the 9-11am rafting slot.
Tip: Most non-residents access this kitchen only via the rafting-camp package — book through Nature Trails / Thrillophilia. Standalone walk-ins are rare. Cash + UPI; cards via the central desk.
Signature: Non-veg thali with fish, rice, sol kadi and aamti
Prabhakar Lodge serves Maharashtrian + Chinese + Punjabi + South Indian — the non-veg thali (fish + rice + sol kadi + aamti) is at ₹150, one of the cheapest Konkan fish thalis in Raigad. Outlook Traveller listed. Useful for budget rafters not staying at camps.
Tip: Non-veg thali at ₹150-200 is the standout-value order on the Mumbai-Kolad weekend rafting trail. Open 7am-10:30pm. Cash + UPI.
WHERE TO SLEEP · EDITOR'S PICKS
Camp / Cottage Stay
We recommend it because it sits directly on the Kundalika River—the main reason travellers come to Kolad—and is within walking distance of the rafting launch points.
Treehouse
We recommend it because sleeping in a treehouse overlooking the valley and river is the kind of specific memory that sets Kolad apart from other weekend getaways near Mumbai.
Campground / Homestay
We recommend this for travellers who want direct river access, basic but clean accommodation, and heavily discounted activity packages without paying resort markup.
Resort
We recommend it as the most established full-service property in Kolad, with in-house rafting, activities, and proper amenities that justify the splurge for first-timers.
