Khajuraho in March
Madhya Pradesh, India
Go in March — temple sculptures shine in spring light, Holi colours the town, and mornings remain walkable before afternoon heat sets in.
March warms Khajuraho to 18-34°C. The Dance Festival may extend into early March (dates vary). Mornings are still comfortable for temple exploration. The sculptures — 10% erotic, 90% depicting daily life, mythology, and celestial beings — reward slow study. Afternoons start getting warm. This is the last comfortable month for unhurried outdoor temple visits before summer heat.
The March story
March is the last comfortable month for extended temple visits. The morning strategy: arrive at the Western Group entrance at 6am (opening time) and work through the major temples before 10am heat builds. The Kandariya Mahadeva temple deserves 45 minutes minimum — the sculptural program moves from earthly life at the base through increasingly spiritual levels to divine figures at the top. The famous erotic panels are at eye level on the exterior — a deliberate placement that scholars debate (sacred ritual? celebration of life? practical education?). No consensus exists, which makes Khajuraho more interesting than a resolved answer would. For afternoon heat management, the Archaeological Museum is air-conditioned and houses some of the finest individual sculptures. The Raneh Falls excursion (20km, on the Ken river, only accessible post-monsoon through March) offers volcanic rock formations and crocodile sightings. March budget: Rs 1000-3000. Carry water and sunscreen for temple visits. The Dance Festival overflow into early March (check dates) can extend the cultural experience.
