January Kargil is frozen — -15 to -5°C with the town buried under snow. The Suru valley is white. The war memorial sits in winter silence. The Zanskar river is frozen solid (the Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar happens January-February, accessed from Leh, not Kargil). The Srinagar-Leh highway is closed. The only access is by air to Leh, then a challenging winter drive. Kargil in January is effectively cut off.

The January story

Do not plan to visit Kargil in January. The town is cut off by road, has no airport, and winter temperatures make casual visits dangerous. The Chadar Trek (frozen Zanskar river walk) is accessed from the Leh side, not Kargil. If winter Ladakh calls to you, fly to Leh. Kargil's 1999 war story is best understood through a visit in June-September when the memorial, the surrounding terrain (Tiger Hill, Tololing, Point 4875), and the town itself are accessible and can be properly appreciated. Plan ahead — the Srinagar-Leh highway opens in May-June.
