Karaikal in August
Puducherry, India
Monsoon rains make August too wet for beach and coastal activities
August in Karaikal continues the Coromandel humid lull. Daytime 26-33C, humidity 85-90 percent, rainfall 80-100mm. The Velankanni Catholic feast — built around the September 8 nativity-of-Mary — has its pre-feast novena from August 29; Karaikal becomes the natural overnight base for Tamil-diaspora and Sri Lankan Catholic pilgrims arriving from Chennai-Pondicherry side and combining Velankanni (27km south) with Thirunallar (4km from Karaikal town) and Nagore Dargah (14km north). Hotel demand spikes 30-40 percent in the last 10 days; book ahead. Aadi-month special poojas at Thirunallar continue. The Karaikal beach walk and Saint Theresa shrine remain off-limits-to-comfort for general tourists; pilgrim-circuit visits work because the destinations are religious-not-recreational. Push to October for the broader visit.
