Idukki in June
Kerala, India
Monsoon rains make most trails impassable and views obscured
Idukki in June is when the southwest monsoon hits the Western Ghats district with full force. The cardamom belt (1000-1500m) receives 600-800mm rainfall, lower Idukki at 600-800m elevation 500-700mm, all part of the district's 4,000-6,000mm annual total — among the highest in South India. Daytime 22-28C feels mild but constant rain and 90 percent humidity make outdoor activity miserable. NH85 Kochi-Munnar-Thekkady (190km via Adimali) becomes landslide-watch country: Kerala PWD typically closes Adimali-Munnar 1-2 days per week, Kothamangalam-Painavu stretches see similar closures. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary (70 sq km) Forest Department suspends visits under safety rules. The Idukki Arch Dam (168.91m height) KSEB permit office at Cheruthoni stays open 9am-12pm but the 2km escorted walk to the dam viewing platform becomes a soaked, leech-prone slog. Cardamom Planters Association estate walks suspend in heavy rain. Hotel rates run year-low: homestays ₹600-1,500, mid-bracket resorts ₹1,800-3,500. Calvary Mount, Painavu town indoor activities (Hill Produce Marketing) the only reliable options. The trip you came for cannot happen until October.
